Brian and I joined fellow Ags Wednesday evening at Cafe Iguana for our annual Muster Day event. While there were fewer people in attendance this year, we had fun meeting people of all ages and hearing about what has brought them to the island. The first guy we met was a Class of 2011 who is here on the Study Abroad program. We asked him about student life here and he thought food was pretty cheap, since he eats at the $4 hawker stands on a regular basis. Unfortunately his housing has no A/C and I can only imagine how hot that must get! Not surprisingly, a variety of former students bought his beer all evening. After all, $10 beers are tough on a student's budget. We enjoyed some fairly decent fajitas and beer and then held a brief Muster ceremony where we remembered those Aggies who have passed away since last year.
Muster is one of my favorite A&M traditions because every year, on April 21, we take time to talk about our college days and pay our respects to those who are gone. The tradition is especially dear to me while living overseas. We visited Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany for Muster 11 years ago and I'm always impressed that former students gather together every year no matter where they are in the world.
This year Brian and I watched the younger crowd doing tequila shots while we mostly hung out with people with families like ourselves. Somehow it seems we've gotten old! It was a fun evening for people who share a common bond through the enduring Aggie spririt.
